Christmas Day is celebrated every year on 25th of December. It is celebrated as the birthday of Jesus Christ. Primarily millions of Christians around the world celebrate this festival. Non-Christians also celebrate this festival.

How Christmas is celebrated?

As Christmas is the festival of joy and happiness; everyone especially children waits for this festival with so much of excitement. On Christmas people give gifts to each other. People decorate Christmas trees with lights, candles, candies and gifts.

A mythical character called ‘Santa’ or ‘Santa Clause’ plays a major role during this festival. ‘Santa’ wears a beautiful dress with a great beard and he entertains children and gives them gifts.

In 221, Sextus Julius Africanus identified December 25 as the birth date of Jesus Christ and after that it became the universal accepted date. Although the birth date of Jesus Christ is unclear till now.

Contemporary Customs

There is the custom (in west) of placing branches of fir trees in the house. This custom was first appeared in 1494. The origin of the custom of Christmas trees is unknown but fir trees decorated with apples were first known in 1605. The use of candles on such trees was first seen in 1611. In most of European countries; gifts are exchanged on Christmas Eve (i.e. 24th December as it is believed that baby Jesus was born that day. However, in North America; gifts are exchanged on 25th December’s morning.
