India was under British rule before 1947. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress and Poorna Swaraj (पूर्ण स्वराज) was declared on 26 January 1930 however India got independence on 15 August 1947.

After the independence, a committee was formed to make the constitution of India. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led the Draft committee of the constitution.

It took about 2 years 11 months and 18 days to finally make the constitution and a cost of about 6.4 million rupees.

The constitution was fully prepared on 26 November 1949 but came into effect on 26 January 1950 on the Poorna Swaraj Diwas.
